Hello, my name is Holly and I am the new Sustainability Coordinator. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, explain my role, and talk about my plans for the coming academic year.

The Sustainability Coordinator is a one-year graduate position on the University’s Environment team, which sits within the Estates department. The role is focused on student and staff engagement, so I will be working on initiatives to raise awareness of and support action on the University’s sustainability strategy.

I graduated from the University of St Andrews in June this year with an MA in Philosophy. Within the discipline, my focus area was moral philosophy and I was particularly interested in exploring its applications to climate issues. I researched and wrote on topics such as the exclusion of indigenous perspectives from environmental science, the division of responsibility for climate change, and the use of visual art to raise awareness of the climate crisis.

The insights I gained from this research, along with my experience working in creative roles for student-led organisations such as UnEarth Magazine and On The Rocks Festival, have led me to firmly believe that the arts have an important and untapped potential to communicate knowledge about environmental and ecological issues. This is something that I hope to further explore through my work this year, and I look forward to collaborating with other members of the University community in doing so.

I will be posting here and on the Environment team’s Instagram and Facebook pages on sustainability-related news, events and opportunities, so keep an eye out.

For now, here are some of my favourite moments and sources of inspiration from this summer – graduating, travelling and visiting exhibitions – along with some of my own environmental illustrations.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to with me, please feel free to email me at [email protected].
