Spare Spoon returns for a two-week trial
This sustainability initiative to reduce food waste from halls of residence and redistribute free hot meals has returned to Main Bar in the Students’ Association.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday (1 December to 12 December) from 7:30pm, all students, staff, and community members can bring along a container with cutlery to fill with catered food and eat in a social space. Leftovers are collected from McIntosh Hall by student volunteers using a cargo e-trike from Transition University of St Andrews.
As exams loom and winter expenses pile up, Spare Spoon offers a way to combat the cost-of-living crisis, provide a convenient respite, and reduce the food waste (and associated carbon footprint) of the University.
Originally started by students, Spare Spoon has been revived through coordination between the Environment team, Residential and Business Services, and the Students’ Association, and carried out by a new group of student volunteers. With enough momentum, Spare Spoon could become a staple next semester!
Taking place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday enables students and staff to utilise the Campus Larder on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. While Campus Larder will be closed from Saturday 6 December over the winter break, Aldi vouchers are available through the Students’ Association – and everyone is welcome at Spare Spoon.
Updates on availability of leftovers throughout the trial will be shared via social media on the day. Follow @SpareSpoon_StA on Instagram to keep up to date!
