Cans: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Cardboard: This should be recycled in the Cardboard Recycling Stations across campus or Grey bins in private accommodation. Boxes should be flat packed before being disposed of.  

Cartons: These should be recycled in Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

CDs/DVDs: If usable, they should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Unusable items should be given to your residence staff or recycled at Fife Council Recycling Centres. Do not place these in regular bins.  

Chemical Waste: Your school will have procedures in place for their disposal.

Clothes/Textiles: These should be donated to the BHF bins across campus or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times.  

Coffee Cups: These should be recycled in special coffee cup bins found in coffee shops.   

Cooking Oil: This should be put into a bottle and disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Crisps/Sweet Wrappers: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Crockery: Usable crockery should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Broken items should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.

Food Waste: This should be recycled in the food waste bins across campus or in the Brown bins in private accommodation.  

Furniture: Usable furniture should be donated to various charities or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Unusable Furniture in halls will be handled by your Residence teams. In private accommodation these should be disposed of at Fife Council Recycling Centres

Gas Cylinders: Your school will have procedures in place for their disposal.  

Glass: This should be recycled in the designated glass recycling bins located throughout St Andrews or at Fife Council Recycling points. Do not place glass items in any other bin.  

Gloves: plastic and rubber gloves should be disposed of in the General Waste bins. For gloves in labs your school will have procedures in place for their disposal.  

Green Waste: this should be recycled in the Brown bins in private accommodation.  

Hangers: Usable hangers should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Broken items should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Hoover Dust: This should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Ice Cream Tubs: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Juice Cartons: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Knives: Usable knives should be donated to the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times.  

Laminated Paper: this should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation. Do not put this in regular paper bins.  

Magazines: these should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Medicine: Empty bottles should be rinsed and recycled in the designated glass recycling bins located throughout St Andrews or at Fife Council Recycling points. Bottles with liquid in them can be returned to the chemist where they were purchased.  

Metal: Small metal items should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation. Large metal items should be recycled at Fife Council Recycling Centres.  

Milk Cartons: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Mirrors: Intact mirrors should be donated to various charity chops. Broken mirrors should be recycled at the Fife Council Recycling Centres.  

Monitors: If usable, they should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Unusable items should be given to your residence staff or recycled at Fife Council Recycling Centres. Do not place these in regular bins.  

Nappies:  

Newspapers: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Office Paper: This should be recycled in the designed paper bins across campus or in the Grey bins in private accommodation.  

Paint: This can be donated to some charity organizations. Otherwise allow the paint to harden and then recycle it at Fife Council Recycling Centres.   

Paper Bags: These should recycled in either the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Grey bins in private accommodation.  

Paper Clips: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Paper Towels/Napkins: These cannot be recycled and should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Paper: This should be recycled in the designated paper bins across campus or in the Grey bins in private accommodation.  

Pen Cartridges: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.

Phones: Many manufacturers have takeback schemes for old phones. Otherwise usable phones should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Plastic Bags: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus if clean, otherwise in General Waste. In private accommodation they should be recycled in the Green bins if clean, or Blue if not.  

Plastic: Most plastics can be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation. However, hard plastics should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.    

Polystyrene: This should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Polythene Wrappers: These should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Printer Cartridges: These can be returned to various companies for recycling.  

Razor Blades: These should be wrapped and disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Sandwich Packaging: These cannot be recycled, unless specified, and should be disposed of in the General Waste bins across campus or the Blue bins in private accommodation.  

Sanitary Waste: These should be disposed of in sanitary bins in toilets.  

Shoes: These should be donated to the BHF bins across campus or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times.  

Shredded Paper: This should be recycled in the paper bins across campus or Grey bins in private accommodation.  

Shrink Wrap: This should be recycled in the Dry Mixed Recycling bins across campus or in the Green bins in private accommodation.  

Small Appliances: If usable, they should be donated to various charity shops or the Eco Hub on Kinnessburn Road. Transition also runs donation events at different times. Spectacles: Old glasses can be returned to opticians for reuse and recycling.
