Fairtrade, Trade Justice, and Ethical Consumption Annual Progress Report at the University of St Andrews
2024-2025

As part of our ongoing commitment to Fairtrade, trade justice, and ethical consumption, the University of St Andrews has made significant strides this year in line with our SMART Fairtrade action plan. This report outlines key actions and progress made across campus and in collaboration with our wider community.
Campus Engagement and Visibility
We refreshed all promotional and point-of-sale materials across university cafés and staff areas to better highlight Fairtrade products and values. These updated materials aim to increase awareness and encourage ethical purchasing choices among staff, students, and visitors.
Retail Expansion
In support of our new sustainability-themed exhibit, we expanded the range of Fairtrade goods available in the University Museum gift shop. This initiative not only aligns with our sustainability goals but also supports Fairtrade producers by increasing product visibility and sales.
Student Engagement and Events
We actively engaged students through social media campaigns and in-person events. A highlight of the year was Sustainability Week, during which we hosted Andy Ashcroft, founder of Koolskools, the UK’s only fully Fairtrade school uniform company. Andy shared insights from his work with Fairtrade cotton producers in India, emphasizing the transformative impact of the Fairtrade Premium on education and community development.
Student-Led Initiatives
Our student-run food co-op played a vital role in promoting Fairtrade by spotlighting specific products and offering them at discounted rates. This initiative not only supported ethical consumption but also empowered students to take ownership of sustainability efforts on campus.
Conclusion
These actions reflect our continued dedication to embedding Fairtrade principles into university life. We remain committed to transparency and accountability, and this report will be made publicly available as part of our broader sustainability reporting.
